A NEW RHYTHM OF LIFE.

The moment you start driving the all-electric MINI, you’ll not only enjoy the fun-to-drive performance, smooth, strong acceleration and quiet delivery. The all-electric MINI opens up a whole new routine and lifestyle for you. After all, you can ‘tank up’ with the 'fuel' you need, whenever you want – at home.

Electric MINI – charging – domestic socket

PLUG IN AT HOME.

You don’t actually need any complex installation or unit to charge at home. All you have to do is plug into any conventional household 230-volt power socket (3 Pin Wall Plug) – and relax.

Our surveys show us that the average commuter uses less than 20% of the MINI Cooper SE battery per day. Even if you use your normal domestic electric socket, this 20% is charged in approximately 3 hours. The standard charging cable and adapter is, of course, included with your new all-electric MINI.

With an optional Mode 3 cable, you can charge anywhere you park.

YOU CAN DO IT IN YOUR SLEEP.

You can finally have it all. Wake up, fully rested in the morning to a 'full tank', and start the day, full of energy.

Just like a mobile phone, you can plug your all-electric MINI into your domestic household socket overnight and it will have recharged completely (approx. 15 hours).

Should you happen to park in a basement car park, you could ask your landlord if it would be possible to install a simple 3 Pin Wall Plug socket for your parking space.

GOOD TO KNOW.

One interesting fact is that since household electricity is charged per kilowatt/hour, it doesn't make a difference to you financially whether you charge your MINI faster – or slower.
Electric MINI – MINI Wallbox – charging at home

WALL OF POWER.

While you can always use your standard charging cable at home or on a holiday trip, the premium quality MINI Wallbox offers you a convenient, faster alternative for daily charging at home.

Figures can vary, of course, but a dedicated, 3-phase 11 kW wallbox connection will generally give you up to 3-times faster charging time. So your all-electric MINI can be fully charged within around 3.5 hours.

To install a wallbox, you will need the expert assistance of an approved electrician. If you are interested in installing a MINI Wallbox, we would be happy to help you locate such a specialist in your area.

CHARGING AWAY FROM HOME.

As much as we love driving our MINI, we still have to park it from time to time – and usually for much of the day.
Electric MINI – public charging – at work

Make double use of your parking time.

With your all-electric MINI, you can make good use of this time by taking advantage of the ever-growing number of charging stations at public parking spaces.

More and more supermarkets, shopping centres and furniture stores are offering free use of their AC, and DC, charging stations or triple chargers at their parking facilities. A growing number of hotels are also keen to be seen as more environmentally aware and making more effort to accommodate guests with electric vehicles. And some multi-story car parks are also offering electric parking spaces at no extra cost.

Flexible and clean.

You can charge your all-electric MINI with an optional Mode 3 cable at public 11 kW charging stations.

Several public charging stations are equipped with both alternating current (AC) via a Type 2 connector and direct current (DC) via CCS plug that gives you up to 50kW electric power.

POWER = WORK/TIME.

If you have a parking space at work, your employer might consider setting up charging facilities for you and your colleagues. The same conditions apply as with charging at home. If you park for a longer period, a high-voltage connection isn’t required. A standard 3 Pin Wall Plug socket is all you need – so you can start your journey home with a fully-charged battery.

The high charge power provided by the Combined Charging System (CCS) comes into play for charging on longer distances.

LOW WEAR AND TEAR.

The all-electric MINI drivetrain consists of far fewer working parts than a combustion engine. That means there are accordingly fewer parts that need to be repaired or replaced over time.

BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION.

Your all-electric MINI converts braking energy into electricity by using its motor as a generator, and puts some power back into your battery every time you decelerate.

This so-called regenerative braking also conserves the disc brakes and prevents the creation of fine dust particles caused by the wear abrasion of the brake discs.

MINI CHARGING.

HOW DO I FIND CHARGENOW CHARGING STATIONS?

The MINI navigation system provides you with direct access to all charging stations in the ChargeNow charging network.

You can also search for charging stations: When you set "charging stations" as a special destination in your navigation system, you will be presented with a list of charging stations near you.

HOW DOES CHARGING AT A CHARGING STATION WORK?

You can use the ChargeNow charging card to unlock charging stations and start the charging process.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW WHEN CHARGING?

  1. Switch the engine off and apply the handbrake.
  2. If necessary, set the current before charging.
  3. Do not use any extension cables.
  4. Always connect and disconnect the charging cable in this order:

    Connecting:

    1. Connect to the socket.
    2. Connect to the vehicle.

    Disconnecting:

    1. Disconnect from the vehicle.
    2. Disconnect from the socket..

    LED lights:

    • White light: Signal light
    • Red light: Charging error
    • Orange light: Initialising

    • Green light: Charging complete

  5. Lock the vehicle. The charging process will only start once your vehicle is locked.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CHARGING USING ALTERNATING CURRENT (AC) AND DIRECT CURRENT (DC)?

Normal charging with alternating current (AC):

This charges your car efficiently, primarily overnight but also during the day. Compared to a domestic power socket, an AC charging station provides more power and can charge the battery in just a few hours. This type of charging station is referred to as an AC charging station, for short.

Quick charging with direct current (DC):

DC quick charging stations are the better option when you need to charge your car fast. They can recharge your vehicle's battery quickly – while you go shopping or have a bite to eat, for example. The charging process lasts between 30 and 40 minutes. This type of charging station is referred to as a DC charging station, for short."

ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL STANDARDS IN THE SUPPLIER NETWORK.

What are the key raw materials used for the MINI Cooper SE’s high-voltage storage and what do you do to ensure that they are they sourced responsibly?

The key raw materials of the high-voltage storage are cobalt, lithium, graphite and nickel. The shell of the high-voltage battery is made of aluminum. MINI (BMW Group) is committed to developing a supply chain that is responsible, sustainable and one that meets our own high ethical and human rights standards. Each nominated supplier must provide information on the implementation of environmental, social and governance standards including respect for human rights and the prohibition of forced labour.
We work closely with key raw material suppliers to ensure that all materials are responsibly sourced both to protect and enhance the environment, and to ensure the safety and well-being of the employees at any point along the supply chain. We also continue to streamline logistics operations to reduce impacts from transporting components to our plants.

Do you know the sources of these raw materials and how do you ensure your suppliers meet the sustainability requirements?

MINI (BMW Group) examines the origin of our raw materials very closely and critically. When selecting suppliers we adhere to the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Business Conduct. We know the origin of the raw materials for our high-voltage batteries – in other words, the supply chains for cobalt, lithium, nickel, graphite and other raw materials are transparent. Furthermore, we commit our direct suppliers to meet our sustainability requirements with their own suppliers. The transparency of supplier networks is the basis for ensuring our sustainability requirements for our suppliers.

How do you ensure that cobalt is responsibly sourced?
Together with BASF, Samsung SDI and Samsung Electronics, we are committed to sustainable cobalt mining. In a joint project in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we want to understand how the living and working conditions of local people can be improved. In order to prevent or mitigate adverse impacts and not to let the people of the Congo down, we have also commissioned the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) GmbH to improve working conditions in artisanal cobalt mining in a pilot project in the DR Congo. We are aware of our responsibility that the raw materials are mined and processed under normal conditions. We are regularly on-site, know the mines and the working methods of our partners and ensure a clean recovery. In addition to this, to generally limit the need for critical raw materials such as cobalt, the BMW Group pursues the goal of increasing the proportion of recycled cobalt in battery cells.

What steps do you take to ensure the procurement process for aluminium is fair and sustainable?

In the aluminum procurement process, we not only buy for our own needs, but also make this material available to our suppliers reliably and at calculable prices. This creates planning security on both sides. In order to be able to meet our long-term demands for sustainably produced aluminum in the future, the BMW Group became the first automobile manufacturer to join the “Aluminum Stewardship Initiative” – actively demanding ecological and social sustainability for certified aluminum across the entire aluminum value chain from the mine to the recycling process. We are also strive to source more recycled aluminium in our manufacturing processes.

Where does your lithium come from and how do you maintain a sustainable sourcing process?

The lithium used in the components of the Mini Cooper SE, comes from Australia. The extraction comes from hard rock deposits, which are subject to the highest standards in terms of sustainability. The BMW Group continues to conduct research on how materials such as lithium can be repurposed by means of battery recycling – for example, by re-manufacturing, or ‘closed loop’ concepts.

What steps do you take to ensure your suppliers meet sustainability requirements?

Gaining maximum visibility of our supply chain helps us identify issues on the ground and deal with them effectively, often in partnership with our suppliers and other stakeholders. The increase of transparency and resource efficiency in our supply chains is based on compliance with environmental and social standards as defined in the BMW Group sustainability standard for the supplier network. Each supplier must consider the sustainability requirements of the BMW Group in its offer. Furthermore, we are guided by international standards such as the guidelines of the UN Global Compact Initiative (Davos, 01/99) and the "Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work" (Geneva, 06/98), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and their due diligence process with the Requirements of the "UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.“

At what point does the MINI Cooper SE become greener than the MINI Cooper S?

The greenness of any electric car ultimately depends on the source of the mains electricity that feeds the battery. Another aspect of the lifetime CO2 footprint is the energy used to manufacture the battery pack. With this in mind, tests showed that if the MINI Cooper SE is charged using a renewable electricity mix, it breaks even or has ‘worked off’ the CO2 released during its manufacturing after approximately 19,000 km. Over a full life cycle, the emissions of a MINI Cooper SE are 40% (EU mix) and 70% (renewable mix) compared to that of a petrol-driven MINI Cooper S. That means, using typical daily driving distances, it takes just twelve months of driving for the MINI Cooper SE to offset the extra global warming emissions from producing it.
